A Trip to Hiwassee College

In July, 2012, under the leadership of Mr. Gong, we six went to Hiwassee College for a short-term studying trip. It was really an amazing trip in which we came across lots of persons and things quite beyond our expectation.

The US gave me a big surprise when we first arrived in Newark Airport. You can never imagine how crowded and messy it is if you have not been there. Yet, we were not frustrated by the delay of the flight because the humor of the people around inspired us a lot. That was the first time I learn the spirit of American humor in person.

It was mid-night when we arrive in the dorm of Hiwassee College. The temperature was very low and it was freezing not because of weather but the air-conditioning. Yet, we felt so warm when we saw the toiletries and a hand-writing welcoming card from Dr. Tricoli, the president of the College. Hiwassee is surrounded by hills. It is remote and quiet. I will never forget the fresh air and clear sky there. There were about 300 students in the college but we were amazed at the sports facilities, including a gym, a swimming pool, a ball park, a rugby field, two tennis courts and most surprisingly, a stud farm.

In the following 4 weeks, we deeply felt the warmth, kindness and happiness of people in Hiwassee. Every weekend, Dr, Tricoli took us to different style of churches and witnessed various church ceremonies. I loved the music most. To help us learn more about their culture, we were invited to different homes for dinner. These two ways, as I see it, are the best way to learn local culture.
